A concepts-first reference for computational biology and bioinformatics, with an honest, dated survey of what to actually run.

Every subject is covered twice, in two chapters you can read in either order:

Concepts explain what a problem is and why it is hard. They are written to be true in ten years and are revised only when the science moves.

Implementations survey the tools that solve it today — command-line programs, R, Python, Julia, Rust — and say which to start with and why. They carry a review date, and they change often by design.

That split is the whole architecture of the book. A student can read the concept chapters straight through and never touch a tool. A working scientist who already knows what a spliced aligner does can go directly to the implementation chapter and find out what changed since they last looked.
